Literacy Volunteers on the Green is the recipient of a grant from the Connecticut Community Foundation.
The Foundation awarded the grant of $3,335.00 to Literacy Volunteers on the Green to support tutor training. With the funding, Literacy Volunteers will be able to train 30 new tutors and conduct three formal professional development workshops for 60 veteran tutors in order to improve their skills and expand and update their teaching repertoire.
This grant will aid in implementing the tutor training workshops, which are vital tools in the training process. Pat Landry, a volunteer tutor with Literacy Volunteers on the Green, says the training provided her with the information she needed to effectively work with her student. (It also gave me) “an understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by many of the adult learners that enroll in the program,” she adds.
In addition, the grant will be used for professional development workshops for veteran tutors in the program like Jane Purcell, who has several years tutoring experience. “Teaching techniques evolve, the available modalities continue to increase in number, and students needs vary greatly,” explains Ms. Purcell. “I believe that high-quality continuing education is as important for me now as it was when I was new at this.”
The Connecticut Community Foundation works to connect non-profit organizations in the Litchfield Hills and Greater Waterbury region with their funders and partners to improve life in the 21 communities which they serve.
