Did You Know? Blueberries Can Be Planted In November!

Edible Blueberry Gardening: Blueberries Can Be Planted In November!

With seemingly so many people across America who are glued to their phones, and television sets, it's nice to know that some among us are still connected to old-fashioned family values like enjoying a fun afternoon out with the family and having a real family farm experience.

There has been a big surge in organic blueberry picking that pick your own apple orchards have experienced in recent years, and other berry farms, like DiMeo's Pick Your Own Blueberry Farms in New Jersey are offering pick your own blueberries to the public in the summer time when their organic blueberry crop is in season from around June 10th to August 31st, every summer. Families from all across the New York City to Philadelphia region, drive hours just to go berry picking at the DiMeo family farm.

In an indication that even more families will be interested in taking a trip to New Jersey family blueberry farms like DiMeo’s, The Wall Street Journal reported:

“Lately, growing your own berries, including blueberries, has found new appeal as a healthier alternative buying the chemicals and pesticides found on many grocery store blueberries.”

Americans are getting more and more health conscious, and are demanding better berry farming practices from large berry farms and blueberry growers. There have been too many illnesses and links to cancer for the public to stand by and ignore the fact that most store bought berries are now fumigated with toxic pesticides just before they hit grocery store shelves. Grocery stores also have produce brokers spray the berries with chemicals that will extend shelf life, without consideration for consumers who have to actually eat the berries.

Anthony DiMeo III, a member of DiMeo Blueberry Farms & Non-GMO Organic Berry Bushes Nursery and fourth generation blueberry farmer, weighed in on the new developing berry buying trend.

"People drive hours just to pick blueberries at our family blueberry farms, because it's so beautiful here. I mean, think about it, you are having fun picking fresh organic blueberries right off the bush, your spending quality time with loved ones picking berries with you, if you want, you can even bring a packed lunch and have a free picnic along the gorgeous Pinelands forest that surrounds our blueberry farm properties. We want to create a special blueberry picking experience that people will always remember."

The experience that DiMeo has created is now a model that he uses to teach his blueberry nursery customers how to start a successful pick your own blueberry farm in their part of the country.  DiMeo says:

"If you’re looking for family farm fun in New Jersey, then we invite you to take a ride out and experience why so many people love blueberry picking at our family blueberry farm." We only charge $2.00 a pint for Non-GMO organic blueberries. Now that's about half of what you would pay in the grocery store for organic blueberries. We don't charge any type of admission fees. Just pay for whatever blueberries you pick."

For those more interested in just taking a ride to the New Jersey farm, and purchasing already picked blueberries at their roadside farm market, DiMeo Farms will take care of you.  DiMeo says:

"We sell already picked blueberries by the pink, and by the 12 pint blueberry crate, for those who are elderly or some who just would rather buy blueberries without having to pick them yourself."

In our American culture, many things change. But it feels good sometimes when there always the traditional American family farm that still grows blueberries the old fashioned way. Here's to families, and loved ones, who still want to spend time with each other, and enjoy one another's company in the digital age when people are attached to their phones and computers.
