Danbury Students Selected for Connecticut Invention Convention

Winners of districtwide competition to move on to state level

DANBURY, CONN. — More than 400 Danbury students showed off their latest inventions for two days at the districtwide Invention Convention held March 18-19 at Western Connecticut State University. Now 38 of them are heading to the Connecticut Invention Convention. The 32nd annual convention will be held Saturday, May 2, at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. More than 130 Connecticut schools and 10,000 young inventors participate every year.

The following Danbury students and their inventions have been selected for state competition: Aiden Schultz, “Sleep-n-Ator”; Connor Barrigas, “Solar Dog”; Edward Bell, “Allergy Tags”; Braeden Callaghan, “The Lift Assist”; Jake Defonce, “The Phone Shade”; Santiago Delgado Siu, “The Light Clean Fight Shoe”; Lorenzo DeLuca, “Save-a-life Car Seat Alert”; Jennifer Grant, “Shake Free Vest/Jacket”; Aidan Johnston, “The Wet Away”; Lasyapriya Josyula, “The One Desk”; Benjamin Laham, “The Magnetic Separating Headphones”; Clarissa Lugo, “Phlebotomy Trauma Case”; CJ Reda, “Lazer Bases”; Angela Saquinaula, “The Roof Snow Melter 9000”; Jon Schoelkopf, “Pull Outlet”; Khuskhi Sukhadia, “Better Balm”; Michael Totten, “The Rolling Shovel”; Aallyah Frank, “The Her-Doo”; Morgan Muller, “Lice Flee Scrunchy”; Sarah Bekkali, “Quiet Night”; Cal Wallin, “The Head Heater”; Benjamin Miller, “Machine6”; Victoria Calderon, “Bounce Bounce Chair”; Carmen Jacobs, “The Snow Out”; Nathan Maruffi, “Puddle Cleaner”; Jason Schmidt, “The Garbage Grabber”; Alexis Tavares, “No More Spills Magic Milk Helper”; Emily Burton, “The Big Dipper”; Sabrina Figueiredo, “Double AAP Pillow”; Andre Ruiz Loera, “Snap N Catch”; Alena Boujid, “The Puppy Catcher”; David Urena, “The CD Cleaner”; Alexis Dahstrom, “The Water Your Plant-a-Nator”; Dymeir Yates, “Solar Heated Birdhouse”; Matthew Gleissner, “The Water Walker”; Jennifer Cruz, “Diary Holder”; Miguel Couto, “Helper Holder”; and Toriana Roe, “Sweet Sips.”

The Invention Convention is part of the science curriculum. For three weeks students engage in coming up with ideas and putting them into motion. One of the crucial learning curves for students is to figure out how to solve problems with their inventions and tweak them to perfection.

South Street School student David Urena designed his “The CD Cleaner” after finding he couldn’t listen to his CDs because they were too dirty. The invention is a turntable equipped with a brush that cleans them. With a little help from his mechanical father, David reconfigured his invention after he discovered that it put too much pressure on the CDs. Though a process of trial and error, he changed the angle of the brush for less pressure.

The invention convention fosters interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics learning for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
