(Park)ing day returns to Danbury

At the corners of Main and White

Every year, on the third Friday of the Month, it is International Parking day.

And just what does that mean? Well according to the website "PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks."

Expanding Space

And Danbury, with major assistance from CityCenter, was in the thick of things. A section of Main Street parking was set aside to build a park out of Parking. To oversee the 'park' CityCenter spokesman, Ted Killmer, was on hand to explain the 'to-do'. The project began in 2005 in San Francisco. The need for more green space in urban environments was the reason. Since then it has grown to encompass cities on six continents.

Danbury Parks

In 2009 Daryl Ohrt, of the Plaid Advertising Agency took to the streets. He wasn't alone on that day. But since then there have been few, if any, other attempts to build parks on (Park)ing day. That s until now...

This year City Center Danbury decided to set up a park in front of International Beauty Salon,  The Cultural Alliance and Escape to the Arts on Main Street.

Playing in the Park

During the brief time I spent there some young children came by on their bicycles and played checkers and Bryan, a student at Naugatuck Valley Community College also looked to play a game.

Only time will tell how big the (Park)ing situation will be for next year, but rumor has it: look out for bigger and better.
