JAN. 7            LITERARY READING: The WCSU Master of Fine Arts in Creative and Professional Writing program will present readings by Dr. Joe Klemczewski, a graduate of Western’s M.F.A. program, and Onnesha Roychoudhuri at 7 p.m. in the Washington Room at the Maron Hotel & Suites, 42 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.  JAN. 25          COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY: The WCSU Office of Student Financial Services will host College Goal Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. College-bound high school seniors and their families will receive assistance from financial aid professionals in completing the FAFSA form online. JAN. 26          VISITING ARTIST LECTURE: Painter Stanley Lewis will discuss his work at 11 a.m. in Room 144 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. JAN. 26          STUDY-ABROAD INFORMATION SESSION: WCSU will present information about summer study-abroad opportunities in Spain at 12:30 p.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The study-abroad program allows students to earn six credits in just four weeks while being completely immersed in Spanish language and culture. Classes fulfill general education and language requirements. The information session will be free and the public is invited. FEB. 5/MAR. 5  GALLERY OPENING: The WCSU Department of Art will host a gallery opening for the “100@100 Exhibition” in the Art Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The opening will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at which time attendees can preview 100 works of art by 100 artists, to be sold for $100 each at the “Off-the-Wall” fundraising event on Saturday, March 7, at the Gallery. The artwork will remain on view during gallery hours (noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday) through Thursday, March 5. The bidding event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 7. Ticket prices vary; for ticket information, call (203) 837-8403. Ticket sales support the Department of Art Gallery Exhibitions program.

FEB. 18           HELLENIC MELODIES: “Hellenic Melodies: A Journey from Classical to Contemporary” will be performed at 7 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Musical group Diphono with guest artist Emilia Diakopoulou will perform Nikos Kazantzakis’ Greek Operettas “Vaftistikos” and “Kapetan Mihalis,” with music by Manos Hadzidakis. Pianist and musical director Areti Giovanou will provide accompaniment. The performance, hosted by the WCSU Center for Culture and Values, will be free and the public is invited. FEB. 20           FRANKENSAX, JAZZ ENSEMBLE AND JAZZ ORCHESTRA: Frankensax, conducted by Andrew Beals, the WCSU Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Jimmy Greene, and the WCSU Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Jamie Begian, will perform at 8 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. FEB. 21 – 22   HAT CITY DEBATE TOURNAMENT: WCSU will host the Hat City Debate Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at various locations on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The university’s Roger Sherman Debate Society will participate in a competition bringing together student debate teams from colleges across the northeastern United States. All teams will engage on Saturday in several rounds of debate beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 10 p.m. Teams placing highest in scoring will qualify for the final elimination round on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. The public is invited to attend and admission will be free; information on debate locations will be available at the tournament registration site on the first floor of Warner Hall on the Midtown campus.

FEB. 25           FOREIGN SERVICE TALK: Former Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, William R. FEB. 25           JAMES FURMAN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION SEMI-FINAL ROUND: WCSU will host the James Furman Scholarship Competition semi-final round at 12:30 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Western’s finest student musicians will compete to receive scholarships in memory of former WCSU faculty member James Furman. The concert will be free and the public is invited. FEB. 25           RESEARCH SEMINAR: Southern Connecticut State University Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Miranda Dunbar will discuss “Bat Chat: Science Sheds Light on Our Nocturnal Friends” at 4 p.m. in Room 219 of the Science Building on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Offered as part of the continuing “Research Seminar” series hosted by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, the event will be free and the public is invited. FEB. 25/MAR 8  THEATRE PRODUCTION: The WCSU Department of Theatre Arts will present “You Can’t Take It With You” in the MainStage Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 and 26; 8 p.m. on Feb. 27 and 28 and March 6 and 7; with 2 p.m. matinees on March 1, 7 and 8. The play introduces audiences to the freethinking, eccentric Sycamore family and the mayhem that ensues when their daughter’s fiancé brings his conservative, straight-laced parents to dinner on the wrong night. This Pulitzer Prize-winning, uproarious family affair is set in 1936-37 New York, and features comedic fun for the whole family. Directed by John Hickock. FEB. 28           WCSU WOODWIND FESTIVAL: WCSU’s renowned woodwind faculty will offer free master classes for instrumental woodwind students of all ages from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The classes will give students a chance to improve technique, play together and develop musicality on their instruments while working with WCSU’s woodwind faculty: Gina Cuffari, bassoon; Chris Cullen, clarinet; Mark Snyder, oboe; and Kerry Walker, flute.  The festival will include classes on playing technique, a rehearsal on a mass ensemble piece, and a performance for peers and parents. FEB. 28           DANCES WITH WINDS: The WCSU Symphonic Band will perform at 7 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. WCSU faculty performers will include Gina Cuffari, bassoon; Chris Cullen, clarinet; Mark Snyder, oboe; and Kerry Walker, flute. The concert will include music of Villa-Lobos, Frank Ticheli, and also feature special guest, WCSU President Dr. James Schmotter, as the narrator for Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” Timothy Wiggins will conduct.
