Book a Marine Life Study Cruise

The Maritime Aquarium is building a new research vessel! And her name is R/V Spirit of the Sound™ - I hear she should be ready by September 2014. Revolutionary in design, this new catamaran is the only research vessel in the U.S.A. with hybrid-electric propulsion and will run virtually silently on electric power for our 2½-hour "study cruises" on Long Island Sound. The 65-foot all-aluminum vessel will replace our current 34-year-old diesel-powered trawler. With more room inside and out, the new research vessel will double our capacity for getting participants out on the water.

Today we booked for a Marine Life Study Cruise on the Maritime Aquarium's 40-foot research vessel, Oceanic. Each cruise lasts 2½-hours and it's wonderful - educational and enlightening. The staff are brilliant, enthusiastic and allow the kids to be hands on, literally. I have done this twice before - once for marine life and one for seal spotting. You sail out of Norwalk and study marine biodiversity from the water's surface down to the bottom for a first-hand understanding of Long Island Sound's interdependent marine life. We even helped heave the drag net out and got lucky pulling out all sorts including: Butter Fish, a Sea Robin, Spider Crabs, a baby shark and a very poisonous jellyfish!

The boat leaves at 1pm daily during July & August and at 1pm on Saturdays during September & October.

Current capacity: 29 Cost: $22.95 per person, Aquarium Members: $17.95.

Passengers must be over 42" tall. If under the age of 21, you must accompanied by an adult.
