Samuels Court Receives Grant from USB Foundation

UNION SAVINGS BANK FOUNDATION GRANT SUPPORTS SELF SUFFICIENCY

Job Readiness Skills for Affordable Housing Residents at Samuels Court, Danbury

Union Saving Bank Foundation, Inc., through its 2014 Grant Program, has awarded nonprofit housing developer and manager New Neighborhoods, Inc. (NNI) a $2,500 grant. Funds will be used for self-sufficiency workshops and job skills training, including a computer lab, for tenants at Samuels Court, NNI’s 28-unit affordable and supportive housing complex at 3-5 Scuppo Road in Danbury. Founded in 1967, NNI is Fairfield County’s oldest active nonprofit affordable housing developer and manager, with properties under management and in development in Danbury, Stamford, Norwalk, and Bridgeport, CT.

NNI’s Tenant Advocate Program (TAP) connects its tenants and tenant leadership in the properties it manages with existing community based programs that can improve their lives and their neighborhoods. TAP, which has its roots in resident services programs, was launched by NNI in 2007. It is an extension of NNI’s mission to develop and preserve affordable housing that provides the stability of a decent place to live for families, individuals and retirees who can’t find appropriate housing within their means. Fairfield County remains one of the least affordable rental and ownership housing markets in the United States.

“We are grateful to Union Savings Bank and the Foundation for joining with us to equip Samuels Court tenants with job readiness tools and access to community resources that they can use to get ahead.” said Ross Burkhardt, President & CEO, New Neighborhoods, Inc.

NNI has created and preserved 600 units of affordable rental and ownership housing in Fairfield County that has offered generations of families, seniors, and special needs populations a safety net and a springboard to economic self-sufficiency.
