'Assisted Living: The Musical Sex, Drugs and Gettin' Old' at the Palace Danbury

Assisted Living: The Musical®, the hit musical that asks the question…. asks the question…. what was the question, again? is coming to Danbury.

Subtitled “Sex, Drugs, and Gettin’ Old,” the play is a rollicking ride through the pleasures and perils of later life.

With songs such as “Help, I’ve Fallen For You and I Can’t Get Up,” “The Uplifting Viagra Medley” and  “A Ton-and-a-Half of Cadillac Steel," the 80-minute show pokes fun at the joys and pains of old age, including senior romance, the first AARP invitation, sagging body parts, and more.

An affectionate tribute to anyone who is growing older (or plans to do so someday), Assisted Living: The Musical® will be performed at The Palace Danbury on April 18 by its authors Rick Compton and Betsy Bennet, who are currently doing a national tour of the production. The duo has written and created a dozen musicals together over the past 20 years.

Don’t look for any Depends jokes in “Assisted Living” say Compton and Bennet.  Instead the play looks elsewhere for its comedic take on later life. The musical fills a vacuum in American theater, according to duo. Aside from “Menopause: The Musical,” there aren’t many other musical comedies that address the ups and downs of aging.

And “Assisted Living” isn’t just aimed at women experiencing hot flashes. “This one’s for everybody,” says Betsy Bennett, “both women and men will get a chuckle out of it.”

Assisted Living: The Musical® is not just for old people anymore than Oklahoma is just for cowboys, Gypsy is for Romanians, or Rent is for people who don’t own their own homes. Assisted Living: The Musical® is for everyone who is aging, or hopes to do so someday. You’ll see your parents, your friends and maybe some of yourself.

Assisted Living: The Musical® will be performed at The Palace Danbury on Saturday, April 18 starting at 7:00 PM . All tickets cost $30. Tickets may be purchased online at www.thepalacedanbury.com, by telephone at (203)794-9944 between 1:00 PM -5:00 PM daily,  or at the box office starting one hour before showtime.
