Due to Extreme Heat Danbury Opens Cooling Site

Weather forecasts are expecting the next two days to be the hottest of this week’s continuing high temperatures and humidity.  As a result, Mayor Mark Boughton has announced that the City of Danbury is opening a cooling center today, Wednesday, July 29th and tomorrow, Thursday, July 30th from 1pm to 5pm.

 

The Cooling Site will be an air conditioned Hart Bus located in front of 198 Main Street. 

Pedestrians or residents who do not have access to cooling systems, or who are without power, are welcome to use the cooling site. 

The Cooling site will be open at the same location and during the same hours both days.

In addition, Mayor Boughton and the City of Danbury’s Health and Human Services Department offer the following tips to prevent our citizens from becoming victims of the heat:

  •        Drink plenty of water
  •        Avoid strenuous activities
  •        Take frequent rests by cooling down in an air conditioned area or near a fan
  •        Wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
  •        Avoid alcohol and caffeine
  •        Eat lightly throughout the day
  •        Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or long periods in the sun

     (especially between the hours of 12 noon and 4pm)

  •        Call 911 at the first signs of heat related illness

 

Heat Related Illnesscommon symptoms include:

Dry Red Spotted Skin – Mental Confusion – Body temp. at or above 105 degrees F

 Dizziness- Weakness  –  Fatigue  -  Headache  -  Nausea – Cramps - Rash
