Special Elections to be Held in Danbury

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that special elections to fill three vacancies in the Connecticut General Assembly will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
The elections will be for:
  • 107th Assembly District, which covers all of Brookfield, and portions of Bethel and Danbury
  • 129th Assembly District, which covers a portion of Bridgeport
  • 23rd Senatorial District, which covers portions of Bridgeport and Stratford.

Resignations from Vacancies

The Senate seat was most recently held by Andres Ayala, and the House seats were most recently held by Auden Grogins and David Scribner.  While all three legislators won their most recent elections to serve during the 2015 legislative session, they chose not to be sworn into office this week and vacancies were declared.

Rules for Special Elections

Under state law, the Governor is required to issue a Writ of Special Election within ten days of a vacancy in the General Assembly, and a special election must be held 46 days after it is issued.  Governor Malloy is filing the writs today.

Reason for the Scribner Resignation

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill reported that she has officially received the resignation of State Representative David Scribner (R-107), which was effective at the close of business January 6, 2015. Representative Scribner, who ran unopposed in the last election, is leaving the General Assembly to join the state liquor control authority, appointed January 6th as commissioner.
