Keep An Eye Out For Girl Scouts!

Since it is Girl Scout cookie season, I have decided to talk about the history of Girl Scouts, everyone’s favorite Girl Scout cookie and when local Girl Scouts will be selling cookies in your area.

The history of Girl Scouts is very interesting. Girl Scouts started with a woman named Juliette Gordon Low. In 1911, Juliette Gordon Low became interested in creating Girl Guides based on what she had learned about Boy Scouts. She formed a Girls Group in Scotland where she taught girls to become self-sufficient, learn practical skills and build character.  In 1912 Juliette Gordon Low came to the United States and began the first American Girl Guide Group in Savannah, Georgia, her home town.  This later became the official Girl Scout Troops that we see today.

Girl Scouts first started selling cookies so that they could fund their activities throughout the year. Now, what are the 5 most popular cookies, you ask? Well, according to Business Insider, the shortbread Trefoils take 5th place. In 4th place are the Do-si-dos, and in 3rd are the peanut butter filled Tagalongs. In 2nd place are the toasted coconut topped Samoas. In 1st place, the wonderful, amazing (drum roll please) Thin Mints win!

I also interviewed my Girl Scout troop leader, Ann Marie Kovaleski and asked her the following questions:

Me: How long have you been a troop leader?

Mrs. K: I have been a troop leader for 6 years.

Me: What is your favorite part about being a troop leader?

Mrs. K: My favorite part is watching everyone grow up!

Me: Do you think that being a Girl Scout changes a girl?

Mrs. K: Yes I do. I think it helps girls be more vocal, and it helps them be more enthusiastic about helping others and it teaches them about friendship.

Me: One more question. What is your favorite girl scout cookie?

Mrs. K: That’s easy. Trefoils!

So if you are interested in helping out the Girl Scouts and purchasing some amazing cookies, they are being sold throughout the Hudson Valley from February 4th - March 6th.
