Brewster Students Raise Over $1200 for Iron Giraffe Challenge

Mrs. Juska’s English 9A students participated in Water for South Sudan’s Iron Giraffe Challenge, an effort to raise $500,000 with other schools to buy a new drilling rig, or “iron giraffe”, so that fresh water wells can continue to be drilled in villages in South Sudan. This project was inspired by our reading of Linda Sue Park’s novel, A Long Walk to Water. Students collected recyclable bottles here at the high school, and used the return deposit as a pie

ce of their donation. They also hosted bakes sales, and reached out to local organizations, like the Brewster VFW, to contribute to our cause.
As a result of their efforts, students raised $1201, exceeding their goal of $1000 to send to Water for South Sudan. This means that BCSD is in the running for a visit from Salva Dut! Students will watch the “drawing” live on Friday from 11:45 – 12 noon, and then we will have a reception to celebrate their efforts.

We are very proud of their sustained effort and enthusiasm. This was a long project – December through the end of March, and they remained committed to doing their part to make this world a better place.
