Written by Rachel Sheinkin and music and lyrics by William Finn, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is about an eclectic group of students who vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
Look out for Spotlight Arts' "Instagram takeovers" that will happen on social media next week. Each day during tech week, a cast member will "take over" our social media (@spotlight_arts_ on Instagram) and give the community some daily sneak-peaks of the action backstage and the dress rehearsal process.
