Revolutionary War Encampment Gives Students a Glimpse into American History

Creativity, hard work, teacher collaboration and funding from the Brewster Education Foundation resulted in another successful Revolutionary War encampment at the C.V. Starr Intermediate School in Brewster.

Students at the school recently participated in hands-on workshops and presentations designed to immerse the children in the colonial period.

The program began with a town meeting where fife and drum demonstrations were embellished with storytelling. Dressed in colonial garb, teachers and parent volunteers led a variety of workshops in which the young people learned about life in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Outdoor activities were conducted and explanations of the difficult life experienced by the colonists due to inferior medical practices were explained to the students.

Veteran teacher Michelle Maselli called the lesson “extremely important.”

“We all must be in touch with our past,” Maselli said. “As Americans in this modern world, we all are losing touch with what life was like 300 years ago. Our forefathers taught us that America was built from virtually nothing. The U.S. is the only country on earth that remains as an experiment in progress. Our children, the next generation, must be in touch with their roots. Our goal in Brewster is to teach children how tough it was so they understand.”
