Memorial Day is a national holiday set aside to honor military service members who died fighting in a war.
Here are a few ways people can observe Memorial Day:
- Visit a local cemetery. Thanks to the Bob Palmer Project over 1200 hundred flags have been placed on Veterans graves from Southeast
- Go Silent on Memorial Day 12:01 PM EDT - This Memorial Day, IAVA will lay a wreath before the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery an Pause at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for the National Moment of Remembrance.
- Wear Blue: Run to Remember is a national nonprofit running community that honors the service and sacrifice of the American military.
- Volunteer at a local veterans group: Brewster, Carmel and Patterson
- Attend a Memorial Day Parade or Ceremony. Click here for a list of local events.
- Wear a poppy. American Legion Auxiliary volunteers and Veterans of Foreign Wars provide them in exchange for donations to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans.
- Teach your children about Memorial Day. There are many online resources including The Teachers Corner and the National Education Association.
