Behind the Scenes at Brewster Theater's Spamalot

Brewster Theater Company has been busy preparing for their upcoming production of “Spamalot.” Lovingly ripped off from the motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, “Spamalot” is the irreverent parody of the Arthurian legend that was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, winning three, including Best Musical for 2005.

Still in search of a permanent home, Brewster Theater Company will be presenting "Spamalot" at Drew Methodist Church at 28 Gleneida Avenue in Carmel, NY.

Some of the members of the cast and production team shared their thoughts with Brewster HamletHub:

Brewster HamletHub: What sort of person is going to love this show?

Brewster Theater Company: Well, Monty Python fans will most definitely love this show, and  people who enjoy a good parody will be very entertained! It's a night of big laughs, lots of singing and dancing, and a twist of the classic tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Brewster HamletHub: What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

Brewster Theater Company: There are so many moving pieces! A 30 member cast, 15 member orchestra, stage crew, 2 evenings of dinner theater, an elaborate set, and costumes galore....just to name a few! It's a good, old-fashioned summer musical that seems impossible to pull off...and yet, it always comes together. It's the magic of theater!

Brewster HamletHub: Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Brewster Theater Company: This show certainly brought out some die-hard Monty Python fans, but most of us do this for the camaraderie and to be involved in a true community project. We get to meet new people from all over the county and escape from our day jobs to sing, dance, and enjoy creating something exciting for our friends and families.

Brewster HamletHub: What’s going to surprise people about this show?

Brewster Theater Company: This show has so much heart! The amount of local talent in this show is amazing. Also, we've incorporated so many roles for both men and women to be featured, when the original had only 5 men.  The transformation of Drew's gym into a theater is wonderful.

Brewster HamletHub: What are you most proud of in this production?

Brewster Theater Company: Our new relationship with the trustees at Drew Methodist Church is blossoming. We are always in awe of how complex details come to life through the vision of the directors, our production team, cast and crew.  We are extremely proud of all the talented men who came out for this show, and the new family that has been nurtured during our time together.

Brewster HamletHub: What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?

Brewster Theater Company:  The tap dancing has been challenging, but so much fun! Also, so many people know the movie...we want to make sure we are true to the original sketches that everyone knows and loves.

Brewster HamletHub: Without giving anything away, what are some of your favorite lines in the show?

Brewster Theater Company:

  • "Stop looking up my skirt!"

  • "In 1,000 years, this will still be controversial!"

  • " There are multi-talented people - people who can sing, and dance - often at the same time!"
