EJ Carrion Brings Inspiration and Encouragement to BHS Students

World recognized inspirational speaker EJ Carrion delivered an important message to juniors and seniors at Brewster High School: “It’s not your IQ - It’s your I-Will!”

Carrion recently met with Brewster students during an assembly which stressed the importance of succeeding in school. The assembly also reminded students that failure can often be an important part of success.

Carrion prompted the members of the Classes of 2017 and 2018 to be patient.

“Overnight success rarely happens,” Carrion said. “Start early. Take risks. It’s awesome to be young. Time is something you don’t own. You don’t know how great you will be unless you go after it. Don’t become a workhorse, but become strategic since everything a youngster achieves results from compound interests.”

Superintendent Valerie Henning-Piedmonte thanked Carrion for his message while commending the school family for keeping kids in tune with not only their school studies, but with life’s goals and the choices they make every day.

“This is a natural journey towards growth and [our students’] journey towards success,” Henning-Piedmonte said.

Brewster High School Assistant Principal Danielle Sullivan explained how Carrion’s message echoed the school’s PBIS (Positive Support for Behavioral Intervention) team.

“Students should follow their passion and have no regrets while changing the culture at our school in a positive way,” Sullivan said.

Social worker Henrietta Lodge described Brewster High as a “positive place to learn.”

“Brewster High School CARES is our mission stressing compassion, accountability, being ready to learn, becoming engaged and staying safe,” Lodge said. “[Our students] are reaching for the stars while being ready to take the risks and conquer fears about being different.”

Jess Juski, a teacher at BHS, noted that teachers were also becoming better educators due to the initiative.

“We are moving out of the classroom since we desire our students to learn more than the printed page,” Juski said. “Teachable moments are important related to behavior and life. Teens must realize that what they put into their education today will affect their future lives.”
