Brewster English Teacher Presents at Student Engagement Conference

On Friday December 2, Mr. Marcus Eure, BHS English teacher was a featured presenter at the Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES Conference on Student Engagement through Communication, Collaboration and Creative and Critical Thinking.

Mr. Eure presented and led a conversation about his process or grade abatement.  Mr. Eure employs his grade abatement process to transform his valuable time with the students to focusing on learning and their collective development rather than the formal grading process.  As Mr. Eure writes, “This shifts ownership of the learning process from teachers to students, and it shifts the ongoing focus for both students and teacher to the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful.”  More information on Mr. Eure’s revolutionary grade abatement process can be found on his blog: Sisyphean High: An English Makerspace.

The Conference on Student Engagement featured keynote speaker Peter DeWitt.  The focus of the conferences was strategies to maximize student engagement by implementing the 4 Cs: Communication, Collaboration and Creative and Critical Thinking.  This was a very valuable professional learning event for Brewster as well as the other regional schools that participated.  More information and activity for can be found for the conference by using the conference hashtag #studentengagement16
