New Year's Eve Safety Tips for Your Dog

For most humans, the New Year means resolutions and a clean start. However for many dogs, it means scary fireworks. Countless dogs go missing every New Year’s Eve/Day, out of fear of the celebratory fireworks used in neighborhoods across the globe.

Fireworks cause anxiety, which can trigger a dog’s innate “fight or flight response”. With this in mind, make sure NOT to leave your dog unattended outside. Even if you have a fenced in yard or a dog who doesn’t normally runaway, a scared dog will try to escape when frightened. Instead, take your dog outside on-leash to use the bathroom this New Year’s Eve/Day.

If you are celebrating the New Year with a party, make sure to watch your dog every time someone opens and closes the door. The constant entrance/exit of people, creates prime opportunities for your dog to sneak out.

The best solution is to let your dog rest in their crate or in another room with their favorite toy/bone. This will help them through the fireworks celebration, while also ensuring they do not accidentally escape the yard or through an opened door.

Put these tips to use, so both you and your dog can welcome in a healthy & safe New Year!
