Academic Spring Cleaning For High School Juniors

It’s spring cleaning time! Here at EA Test Prep, we want to help your clear out you academic closet of any obstacles to the college application process, which begins now and ends when your last application is sent in the fall.

EA Test Prep’s 5 Spring Tips

1.    Develop a positive relationship with your college counselor. Share your academic goals, triumphs, and concerns, so that he or she knows you well. (If you are applying to college as an athlete, also share your thoughts on your sport.) Remember your counselor will be writing a letter of recommendation.

2.    Ask one history or English teacher and one math or science teacher to write a letter of recommendation for you. You will need two teacher recommendations for your Common Application. These teachers should be currently teaching you unless you have a unique relationship with another teacher due to a special community service project or an extracurricular activity. The teacher writing the recommendation should not only know your academic abilities, but also be able to speak about your character. Please remember that the most popular teachers are always asked to write letters of recommendation for many students. You want to ask that person early because eventually so many students will request a recommendation that the teacher will start declining to write them due to an overload of requests.

3.    Use Naviance to help you find your reach, target, and safety schools.  Once you have identified your schools, visit those colleges’ websites to learn about student life and academic programs. Once you have narrowed your choices, try to visit those schools. When touring a campus, take pictures so that you will remember specific aspects of that college that you like and don’t like.

4.    Register for the SAT or ACT. The next SAT is on May 6 and the ACT will be given on April 8.Visit the test sites to learn registration dates or go to the EA Test Prep site at www.eatestprep.com and follow our links to those web pages.

5.    Prepare for the SAT or ACT. You can purchase a book that contains practice tests, you can take a test preparation course, or you can have a private tutor to prepare. If you chose to study on your own, purchase a test preparation book that has the words “Official Guide” in its title because those books are reprints of actual past exams. If you opt to prepare with a group or receive individual instruction, the EA Test Prep Team will be happy to help you.  Our next six-week sessions begin on March 22 for both the SAT and ACT at Brewster High School.

As always, EA Test Prep offers students the option of registering for instruction for English/Reading, Math, or both. No other test preparation program in the area offers that option, which helps save money on this part of the college application process. Additionally, once students register for one EA Test Prep six-week session, they are entitled to FREE review sessions, which are held once a month. Ask your guidance counselor, friends, and family to learn about their experiences with EA Test Prep or contact EA Test Prep at 845-582-0017 or eatestprep@gmail.com. Once you explain your test-taking needs, a member of the EA Test Prep team will guide you to the best method to achieve your goal. If you want to investigate the programs on your own, visit the website at www.eatestprep.com to learn more.

Look for more tips from the EA Test Prep Team in the coming weeks. Remember, “The early bird catches the worm,” so start preparing for the college application process now! Enjoy the first flowers of spring!
