Brewster High School at Washington DC Festival of Music

Last month, students from Brewster High School went to Washington D.C. on an exciting and successful music trip. The Chamber Orchestra, members from the three high school bands, and the theater class attended - around 110 people. Sasha Ono directed the orchestra while Andrea Perdicho directed the band and theater members.

I talked to Ms. Ono a little about their trip and what they did in Washington D.C.

What I learned was an incredible insight to the dedication of our Performing Arts Department at BHS.

What did you do in DC?

We did so much! We went to Ford’s Theater to see the show “Ragtime” which depicts various people’s experiences chasing the American Dream, toured many monuments and memorials in DC, went to the Air and Space Museum, got a special tour of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, went on a dinner cruise on the Patomic river called “The Spirit of Washington,” visited a number of Smithsonian museums, attended the Kite Festival at the Cherry Blossom Festival, and ended the whole trip with a visit to Six Flags.

What an itinerary! Sounds like fun! What was your favorite part of the trip?

My favorite part of the trip was the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. The Students were able to see a world class performing arts venue, the President’s box, and the many significant gifts from countries around the world to honor President Kennedy. We also learned that they have free concerts every night at 6 pm and live-stream them for anyone to see!

How exciting! So what were the outcomes from this trip? I heard you won first place in a competition. Could you tell me about that?

Both ensembles won first place in their categories after being graded on a technical abilities and artistry. Students worked so hard for this honor; coming to school for extra rehearsals at night, practicing at home, rising to the challenge of playing really difficult music, and supporting each other through the entire process. We were able to represent the Performing Arts Department of Brewster High School in a fantastic way and are so proud of all the students. An even bigger outcome of the trip is that students were able to see how much they can accomplish when given a challenge. As a result of this trip, our students have greater technical abilities, have expanded knowledge of America, and students were able to bond over this shared experience. As an added bonus, each place we went to, directors and staff members complimented the respectful behavior of our students as they acted like exemplary representatives of Brewster.

What an amazing feat. You all should be so proud of your hard work. So last but not least, do you plan on doing a trip similar to this again in the future?

Right now, we are all still recovering from the enriching but exhausting itinerary of our trip! We look forward to continuing to elevate our Performing Arts Department with more experiences like our DC trip.

Clearly, this trip was a success, and a nice way to showcase the talent and skill of BHS students and directors. Hopefully there will be more exciting excursions like this in the future!
