Brewster Schools Task Force Invites Community to October 4th Meeting

Letter from Brewster Schools Community Task Force

Dear Brewster Community Member,

On August 29th, we wrote to inform you that a task force was created with the intent of strengthening and uniting the community in light of a recent issue that occurred this summer.

In partnership with the Brewster Central School District, the Task Force has engaged in a number of discussions about the experiences that individuals from different races, religions, cultures, and ethnicities have had in the community and the school District. As a result, we have come to the conclusion that we need to know more about the issues that our students are dealing with in regards to race, ethnicity, religion, color, sexual orientation and/or gender identity within the District and the community at large.

The Task Force is inviting you to share your experiences with us on Wednesday, October 4th, from 7:30pm - 9:00pm at Brewster High School. This date replaces September 28, which was the original date that we had proposed. This event is meant to be one of the ways that we will be enlisting your feedback and engaging in dialog with the community to better understand one another.

The objective of this meeting is for Task Force members to listen and learn from members of the community. There will be no solutions proposed and no “quick-fixes” offered. Instead, we want to hear from you to learn more so that we can collectively and thoughtfully move forward together.

To maximize the opportunity for each person to speak and be heard, we will be facilitating small group discussions. Task Force members will facilitate these small groups and record the concerns, comments and suggestions shared in each group. The Task Force will then review what each group discussed and determine the next steps for making recommendations to the school District and taking some actions within the community to symbolize that we are a united community. While this is not the only time that we will be asking for your feedback, this meeting is an important step forward.

This is an important issue for our community and school District. We hope that you will be able to attend on October 4th from 7:30pm - 9:00pm at Brewster High School.

Sincerely,
Task Force Members

B
