Here’s a foolproof EA TRICK – a skillful act- for the SAT. Every time a question asks you to identify the meaning of a word, cover the word as you read it in the passage. (You can use your finger or your pencil eraser to block out the word). DO NOT read the word. To find the meaning of the word, read three sentences:
1. The sentence before the sentence that contains the word.
2. The sentence that contains the word.
3. The sentence after the sentence that contains the word.
Then write a word to replace the word you are covering; you have now identified the meaning of the word in the text. Look at the answer choices and find the one that is most similar to the word you wrote. You easily have your answer. Often the underlined word is a familiar term that the test designer is using in an unfamiliar way in order to fool you.
