Growlers Oktoberfest in Tuckahoe

You don’t have to travel to Germany to enjoy true Oktoberfest beers. In fact, the farthest you have to go is Tuckahoe. On Saturday, October 1st (rain date Oct. 2nd) Growlers Beer Bistro will hold their 5th annual Oktoberfest, a festival complete with live music, delicious food, amusements for the whole family and traditional German Oktoberfest beers – right in Westchester.

“When Growlers opened five years ago, we made a commitment to support small craft breweries, so that’s what we feature at our bar,” said Eric Lorberfeld, owner. “We look forward to Oktoberfest each year because we get to move outside, meet new people and meet the families of our regulars. It’s great community event where we get to introduce people to traditionally brewed beers from Germany.”

Oktoberfest celebrations continue to be a popular way to welcome the fall, while socializing with friends over seasonal beer. Growlers, a unique beer bistro that serves a different menu of craft beers daily, manages to create an authentic German beer hall atmosphere replete with a big tent and long tables with traditional blue and white tablecloths.

Technically, only beer that’s brewed within the city limits of Munich is considered to be true Oktoberfest beer, the only beer served at the German festival since 1810. Growlers is proud to include two brews from one of them - Hofbrau’s Dunkel and Oktoberfest beers will be poured in addition to Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier and Radeberger Pilsner, both brewed in Germany. Beer will be served in pints for $7 or the 28-ounce refillable Das Boot, a big cup in the shape of a boot for $19. Das Boot refills are $12, half-refills are $7.

There will also be plenty of outdoor food including bratwurst, German potato salad, BBQ chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and, of course, fresh, hot pretzels.

Children will enjoy amusements including a rock-climbing wall, jumping castle, carnival games, tattoo art, face painting and pumpkin decorating. A $15 all-inclusive children’s ticket will be available, which includes one turn on each of the amusements, and one serving each of cotton candy and popcorn. Individual tickets will also be available. Kids attractions end at 7pm.

Adults will also have some fun of their own. In addition to live music by Whoz Ya Daddy beginning at 5pm, a DJ will provide cultural ambience all day long with German music and there will be a traditional stein-holding contest and the ever-popular jousting.

“We are really fortunate to have such a large outdoor space,” said Lorberfeld. “It gives us an opportunity to offer much more at our festival each year. When people come to Growlers we want them to feel welcome, like they’re a part of our craft beer community. For Oktoberfest, we’re able to make it an event the whole family can enjoy.”
