Green Chimneys recently received a gift of two Belgian draft horses bringing some new excitement to the farm, for staff and students alike. This [literally] tremendous gift consists of Billy, who is 18-years-old and stands at about 19 hands (6 feet, 4 inches) and Corky, who is two years his junior and about 17 hands (5 feet, 8 inches). They have joined the Green Chimneys horse herd and once acclimated, participate in riding and driving activities as part of the nonprofit’s therapeutic equine education and intervention program.
[endif]The magnificent pair was donated by the Blumberg family of nearby Rock Hill Farm, who specially selected these horses to be a part of Green Chimneys’ renowned therapeutic riding, horsemanship training, vocational training, and unmounted activities for children with special needs. In the therapeutic day and residential program, children facing social, emotional and behavioral challenges learn how to care for horses, donkeys and ponies, and to manage their own behavior and emotions to benefit their relationship with the animals. Even working with an animal of such size and scale becomes a lesson for children learning to navigate the many situations and settings they will find themselves in at various points in life.
Plan a visit to meet these majestic creatures! The Green Chimneys Farm & Wildlife Center is open to the public every Saturday & Sunday 10am – 3pm.
