Brewster Library Breaks Ground on Phase One of Renovation

The Brewster Public Library broke ground this past week on phase one of its long planned renovation. Work crews erected a handicapped ramp to the original main entrance and began demolition of the ramp that led into the library for more then a decade.

The area under the ramp is to be excavated and a new lower level addition added with office and storage space. The roof of that addition with have a street level courtyard with bistro seating and a secondary library entrance.

Phase 1 is being financed entirely by the library's reserves and a matching construction grant from NYS. The work is scheduled to be completed in the spring. Phase 2 which was approved by the voters back in November is currently being developed and the library board hopes to submit the plans to the village for approval in the spring and hope to break ground in fall 2018.

When completed in 2019 the rear of the library will see a 2 story addition with expanded children's and teen areas. A 50 seat community room, several private study rooms are also planned along with expanded computers work spaces, a 10-12 person conference room available for public use and the library collection. An elevator will also be installed to make the library fully handicapped accessible. Architectural renderings of both projects are currently on display at the library and inn the library website www.brewsterlibrary.org.
