Students participate in "Hour of Code"

Last week over 600 students district-wide participated in Brewster’s “Hour of Code” event to help celebrate National Computer Science Education Week. The Hour of Code program, which aims to expose students everywhere to computer science in a way many have never experienced before, is part of a worldwide initiative to familiarize a new generation with the essential building blocks of computer coding.

Over the week-long event, Brewster students engaged in coding activities using resources from Tynker and Code.org. At C.V. Starr Intermediate School, Library Media Specialist/Instructional Technology Specialist Paul George led students through tutorials on coding using popular themes such as Hot Wheels and Monster High during library classes.

“Computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago,” noted George. “Girls and students of color are severely underrepresented. The good news is we’re changing this for the better. The Hour of Code is gateway toward providing all students with access to high-quality computer science education.”

According to hourofcode.com, over 100 million students worldwide have already tried coding and Brewster Schools are host to just a few of the 198,981 Hour of Code events that have taken place around the world. Thanks to the Hour of Code, computer science was on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney websites. Celebrities such as President Obama, Shakira and Ashton Kutcher all kicked off the Hour of Code week with videos endorsing the program. In total, over 100 partners came together to support this movement, which Brewster is proud to be a part of.
