Today marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York, which passed three years before the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote nationwide.
This centennial, we honor the courageous women of this state who tirelessly fought for the right to vote — and the women who are continuing the fight for gender equality.
Take a look back at some of the New York women who paved the way.
New York State leads the nation when it comes to women's rights, from the movement's start in Seneca Falls to the passage of the historic Women's Equality Agenda in 2015. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Frances Perkins, and Shirley Chisholm continue to inspire and are joined by the activists of today.
Our fight isn’t over. As we recognize this important milestone, we know there is still work ahead.
