State Police investigate apparent suicide from the Newburgh Beacon Bridge

On January 29, 2017 at approximately 7:00 p.m., the New York State Police responded to the westbound side of the Newburgh Beacon Bridge span after a passer-by observed a female subject outside of her vehicle with her hands on the railing of the bridge.

A Subsequent investigation revealed that 48-year-old Melissa Zukowski, of Beacon, had jumped off of the bridge into the Hudson River prior to police arriving on scene.

The City of Beacon Fire Department and the Newburgh Fire Department dispatched marine units to search the river for the victim.  Approximately two hours later, the victim’s body was recovered in the area of the Dutchess County shoreline.
