National CADCA Forum in D.C. Teaches New Skills To Reduce Youth Drug Use

Representatives from Putnam County, NY recently returned from the Washington, D.C. area where they joined more than 3,000 substance abuse prevention specialists and advocates from throughout the country for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America's (CADCA) 27th Annual National Leadership Forum. The Forum is a four-day event packed with opportunities to learn the latest strategies to address substance abuse and hear from nationally-known prevention experts, federal administrators, and concerned policymakers.

“We were so excited to be able to spend several days with other coalitions from across the country, networking, learning  new information and honing our prevention skills so we can make our community a better place, one that doesn’t suffer from the harms of drug and alcohol abuse,” says Bruce Kelly, Putnam CTC Coalition Coordinator. “Each year we return re-energized, more knowledgeable and inspired to go back home and implement strategies for a safe, healthy and drug-free Putnam County.”

CADCA’s Forum covered a wide range of topics ranging from the marijuana legislation landscape and tobacco cessation to the opioid epidemic and underage drinking and e-cigarettes. Members of the Putnam Communities That Care coalition also met with U.S. representatives and senators at the CADCA Forum’s Capitol Hill Day event.

CADCA’s National Leadership Forum, the nation’s largest training conference for community prevention leaders, treatment professionals and researchers and SAMHSA’s 13th Prevention Day, occurred at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center Feb. 5-9
