Beacon Man Facing Attempted Murder Charge in Patterson Stabbing

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that a man from the City of Beacon in Dutchess County is facing charges including attempted murder in Patterson. Mr. Patrick Murphy, aged 27, of 15 Oak Street in Beacon, is accused of repeatedly stabbing another man with a knife.

At about 10:00 a.m. on April 25th, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a 911 call reporting a physical altercation between two men at a residence at 1129 Route 311 in the Town of Patterson. When deputies arrived there, they found a 60-year-old man outside the residence who was bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds to his torso. With the victim were persons later identified as his girlfriend, his daughter and his infant granddaughter.

The victim and the other adults present told deputies that Mr. Murphy had stabbed the victim. At that point, Mr. Murphy exited from inside the residence and was apprehended.

The Patterson Volunteer Ambulance Corps was summoned to aid the victim and he was transported by ambulance to Danbury Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Sheriff’s investigators processed the crime scene, collected evidence and interviewed the witnesses. Investigators determined that Mr. Murphy and the victim were known to each other and that, according to witnesses, Mr. Murphy was the alleged aggressor in the incident.

Investigators charged Mr. Murphy with attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the first degree, both class B felonies, and with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and endangering the welfare of a child, both class A misdemeanors. The child endangerment offense was charged because the alleged violence occurred in the presence of the victim’s infant granddaughter.

The defendant was arraigned before Town of Patterson Justice Anthony Mole and was remanded to the Putnam County jail without bail to await a felony hearing scheduled for May 2nd. If found guilty of the attempted murder and assault charges, Mr. Murphy could face up to 25 years’ imprisonment on both counts.
