Brewster Man Charged With Driving While Intoxicated, Leaving Scene

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Brewster man on a charge of driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and other traffic charges following a crash on Main Street in that Village.

On May 7, 2017 at 6:57 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a telephone report of an erratic driver near the Dunkin’ Donuts store located at 1041 Route 22 in the Town of Southeast. The caller reported that the motorist had nearly hit another car in the parking lot, almost struck the building, and then nearly caused an accident while pulling out of the parking lot onto Route 22. The complainant gave a description of the errant vehicle and its direction of travel.

A few minutes later, Deputy Adam McKechnie spotted the suspect vehicle on Main Street in the Village of Brewster and saw it strike another vehicle in traffic and then flee the scene. The deputy stopped the vehicle at Main Street and Railroad Avenue, whereupon he identified the driver as Mr. Obdulio R. Mendez-Perez, aged 28, of 20 Oak Street in Brewster, and determined that he was allegedly intoxicated. Mr. Mendez-Perez was consequently charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and about a half-dozen other infractions related to his alleged erratic driving. No injuries were reported in the crash.

The defendant was booked at the Sheriff’s Office and then released pending a May 22nd appearance in the Village of Brewster Justice Court. If found guilty of the charges, he faces incarceration in jail, fines totaling thousands of dollars and sanctions against his driving privileges.
