Fatal accident on Route 22 - Road Closed until this evening

Editor's Note: As of 4 p.m. the on scene investigation is complete and the road has been re-opened in both directions.

The Putnam County Sheriff's office and the New York State Police are investigating an accident which occurred at 1450 Route 22 at approximately 1:30 p.m today, May 23.

A 1995 Mitsubishi eclipse was traveling northbound on Route 22 in front of Brewster Shell and partially crossed the double yellow line striking a southbound silver Mercedes. The operator of the Mistubishi, a white male in his 50's was pronounced dead on the scene while the driver of the Mercedes, a female, sustained a broken ankle and bruises and her passenger sustained lacerations and bruises..none of those injuries appear life threatening at this time according to Brewster Fire Department personnel. The injured were transported by ambulance to Danbury Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Route 22 will be closed in both directions at Milltown Rd and at Lakeview Plaza (ACME supermarket shopping center) for the next several hours while the Sheriff''s accident investigation team responds and investigates the scene. The anticipate the roadway opening between 6-8pm this evening.

Driver Killed in Head-On Crash on Route 22

–TWO OTHERS INJURED IN SOUTHEAST COLLISION–
–ROUTE 22 TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR INVESTIGATION–

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that a two-car collision on Route 22 in Southeast this afternoon (Tuesday) has claimed the life of one driver and injured the driver and a passenger in the other car.

The crash occurred at about 1:15 p.m. today, when a northbound vehicle and a southbound vehicle on Route 22 collided head-on just north of the Milltown Road intersection. The male driver of the northbound vehicle was killed in the crash. The female driver and the male passenger of the southbound car were transported by ambulances to Danbury Hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

The identities of the crash victims were not immediately available. At the time of this News Release, the crash was still being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the New York State Police, and Route 22 would remain closed to traffic during the investigation.
