Friends of Recovery — New York (FOR-NY) will host a March for Recovery in communities throughout New York State on June 20, 2017 at 12:00 pm.
FRIENDS OF RECOVERY PUTNAM is hosting the march in Putnam County. Recovery advocates throughout the state will march simultaneously (and in solidarity) in memory of loved ones lost to addiction and in honor of persons living in recovery.
Addiction to alcohol and other drugs is the number one public health crisis facing society today. In fact, as recent headlines throughout the country attest, drug overdoses are the leading cause of death among Americans under 50. According to Drug Deaths in America are Rising Faster than Ever (New York Times, June 5, 2017), "Drug overdose deaths in 2016 most likely exceeded 59,000, the largest annual jump ever recorded in the United States... Although the data is preliminary, the Times's best estimate is that deaths rose 19 percent over the 52,404 recorded in 2015. And all evidence suggests the problem has continued to worsen in 2017."
MARCH4RECOVERY IS INTENDED TO HIGHLIGHT THE NEED FOR AN IMMEDIATE INCREASE IN LOCAL RECOVERY SUPPORT SERVICES AND INVEST IN PEER-DRIVEN SOLUTIONS THAT PROMOTE LONG TERM RECOVERY
