Sheriff's Sergeant Graduates From FBI National Academy

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the graduation of Sheriff’s Sergeant Timothy Keith from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia on June 7, 2017.

Sergeant Keith, who is a supervisor in the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and a K-9 handler, was among 228 law enforcement officials hailing from 47 states and the District of Columbia, 24 foreign nations, five branches of the United States military and seven federal civilian agencies who attended the 268th Session of the Academy. Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe was the principal speaker at the graduation ceremony, held at the Virginia campus.

Internationally renowned for its academic excellence, the FBI National Academy is a ten-week program of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training. Admission to the Academy is highly selective, with candidates nominated by their agencies to attend based upon the officer’s proven record of law enforcement service. Less than one percent of America’s law enforcement officials, and an even smaller percentage of nominees applying from other countries, are selected to attend the program. Since the inception of the Academy in 1935, the Academy has turned out some 50,141 graduates from the U.S. and abroad.

Training for the program is provided by FBI Academy instructional staff, Special Agents, and other instructors holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally as experts in their fields. The Academy program is academically accredited through its affiliation with the University of Virginia, enabling students to earn undergraduate and graduate level course credits.

Sergeant Keith joins the ranks of 10 other active members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office who are alumni of the Academy. Those members are Undersheriff Paul Boscia, Captain William J. McNamara, Captain Thomas Velotti, Captain Frank Christian, Lieutenant Kevin McManus, First Sergeant William Meyer, Sergeant Michael Szabo, Sergeant Kevin Cargain, Investigator John Matrician and Investigator Robert Tichy.

Sheriff Smith was enthusiastic in his praise of Sergeant Keith. “I know I speak for all of Sergeant Keith’s colleagues here in the Sheriff’s Office when I say how very proud we are of him for his years of distinguished service and for this, his most recent accomplishment, his graduation from the FBI National Academy.”

The Sheriff also expressed his gratitude to the sergeant’s family, whom he said had to endure the sergeant’s absences from home throughout the 10-weeks of training in Virginia. “The entire Keith family deserves our thanks for their collective sacrifices and support, which ultimately enabled Tim to attend the academy,” he said.

“Education and training are the vital life-blood of any strong organization,” said the Sheriff, “and I know Sergeant Keith will put the outstanding National Academy training to good work for the citizens of Putnam County as he carries out his important duties each and every day.”
