Brewster Fire Dept knocks down small fire at PCSB

At 11:13 this morning the Brewster Fire Department was dispatched to the Putnam County Savings Bank office on Route 6 for a reported structure fire at that location.

Upon arrival, the responding members of the Fire Department found an exterior storm drain on fire. When that was extinguished, an ensuing investigation revealed that earlier in the day a worker in the building accidentally tripped a circuit breaker and turned on the storm drain pipes heating element which keeps it from freezing in winter. The assistant fire chief on scene stated they believe the wire arced and set fire to the PVC storm drain pipe which scorched the exterior of the building. There was no damage to the interior and there were no reports of any injuries. Responding fire department personnel stated that the bank had been evacuated prior to their arrival.

The Brewster Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Carmel Fire Department Tower Ladder Unit under a Mutual Aid agreement. The Brewster Fire Departments tower ladder is currently out of service and the department has made arrangements to purchase a new tower ladder but it will not be delivered until December. Until then, under the Mutual Aid agreement, whenever a tower ladder is needed in Brewster the Carmel Fire Department will be responding to assist.
