Getting the Word Out This Summer

For coalitions, summertime is a hard time to get people together, what with families going on vacation and kids off to summer camps. It is also a prime time for young people to experiment with drugs and alcohol. In fact, more teens try marijuana for the first time in the months of June and July then in the rest of the year. The answer is simple – they have more free unsupervised time on their hands. So that is why Putnam CTC Coalition has been placing prevention messages on outdoor signage. You may not think that would have any effect but it does.

We live in a mobile society, we are always driving somewhere. Well, say you are stopped at the light on Route 52 by the Carmel Fire Department or on Fair Street by Carmel High School or George Fisher Middle School, Kent Elementary and Primary Schools.  Maybe you are on Foggintown Road at Brewster Middle School or at Putnam Valley Middle and High School, you will most likely see a prevention message. If by chance you have your son or daughter in the car, it might be a good time to start up a conversation.  Or if you are alone, it could remind you that this is an issue you should discuss with your child.

There are no silver bullets when it comes to prevention but we are hoping that these brief messages will kick start some conversations around these topics.
