Services planned for 80 year old Janis Marie Furlong of Brookfield

Janis Marie Furlong

December 01, 1933 - November 24, 2014

Janis M. Furlong, 80, of Brookfield, beloved wife of John D. Furlong died unexpectedly on Monday, November 24th. She was born in Sandusky, OH on December 1, 1933, daughter of the late Peter J. and Mary C. (Smith) Deno of Sandusky. She was a graduate of Holy Angels High School.

Jan made Brookfield her home in 1965. Her deep love of this place and the people and her friendly demeanor was evident by all with whom she came in contact.

She leaves behind her cherished husband of 58 years, John; her treasured children, Daniel J. Furlong and his fiancée Betty Hamilton, of Atlanta, GA, Cynthia S. and her husband Lars Hanson of Honesdale, PA, Therese M. and her husband Michael Salerno of New Fairfield. She also leaves four grandchildren, Shane Furlong, Daniel, Christine & Michelle Salerno. In addition she leaves her two sisters, Carol ValVerde of Birmingham, MI and Anita Stoffel of Gouverneur, NY; as well as five nephews and three nieces.

Jan spent 25 years before retirement as Assistant Comptroller at Brookfield Town Hall. Her volunteer efforts included over 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Brookfield Friends of Library, and in particular as Chairperson of the annual Book sale for BFOL. She served on the Board of Directors of the Brookfield Museum and Historical Society for over 10 years in charge of store sales. She has been on the Board and was secretary of the Laurel Hill Cemetery Assoc. She also spent many years as a member of the Newcomers Club.

She loved life and shared her talents effortlessly. An innovative cook and baker, seamstress and gardener she always looked for new ideas to master. These talents, along with her entrepreneurial spirit allowed her to bake and sew professionally while raising her children. Her family fondly remembers the beautiful birthday and wedding cakes she baked and decorated.

Jan was a true supporter of the arts and was devoted to her love of music, art and dance (especially square dancing). She was grateful to have had the opportunity to travel extensively with her husband and children.

Her religious life and Catholic faith were strong; imparting her wisdom to those who knew her on how to strive to be happy most of all, use your gifts to honor the people you love and give back to your community.
