Ducks of Sandy Hook continue to bring smiles

Brookfield mother of two, Cindy Milner Wasmuth is at it again. She recently facilitated a banner signed with messages of hope to the victims of the Moore, OK tornado featuring the official green-ribboned Duck of Sandy Hook.

The simple message of happiness in the form of a little rubber duckie with a green ribbon all began when Office Todd Keeping of Monroe brought them to the children on their first day back to their temporary school. He lined them up along the window sills, counters and hallways.

The children were delighted.

Duck donations started pouring in from around the country. Soon they were showing up in photos all over the world. So Officer Todd started a facebook page along with witty comments about each photo. The Ducks of Sandy Hook Elementary School now has over 12,000 "likes."

Cindy caught the duck bug, when she felt the helplessness that many felt following the Sandy Hook tragedy. She has since been spotted at parades and police stations, offering ducks wherever they were welcome. Many are now cruising around town on firetrucks and school buses.

The next duck phase will be a float at the Newtown Labor Day Parade on Monday, Sept. 2 at 10:00 a.m. when Officer Todd will be tossing them out to kids and parade watchers.

However more ducks are always welcome. Those who want to donate may order them through Oriental Trading Company or by calling 1-800-875-8480. Be sure to mention "Sandy Hook" to get free shipping and the ducks will be mailed direct to Officer Todd.

Unlimited Signs, Designs & Graphics in Brookfield have donated banners in honor of the ducks.

Cindy is hoping to get a T-shirt business to sponsor 50 yellow shirts for the parade in exchange for publicity. Those interested may call her at (203) 546-8384.
