‘The Snow Queen’ comes to life to WCSU

The Western Connecticut State University Department of Theatre Arts will present “The Snow Queen” on Dec. 12 and 13.

Performances will be held in the MainStage Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13.

Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, “The Snow Queen,” was adapted by playwright Michael Oosterom. The story is about a young girl named Gerda who must find her best friend Kai and save him from the Ice Palace of the Snow Queen. Her magical quest through a frozen world may well have been the inspiration for the Disney production, “Frozen.” The play is full of excitement, fun characters, laughs and puppets – and it’s great for all ages.

“The Snow Queen” is directed by WCSU theatre instructor Anthony DePoto and assistant director Alex Allyn with Marika Di Carlo as stage manager and Victoria Meskill as assistant stage manager.

WCSU theatre arts students comprise the cast as follows: Lauren Bell of Southbury as Lapland Lady; Jaclyn Mercer of New Milford as Gerda; Thomas Ovitt of New Milford as Kai and Robber Boy; Kayla Murphy of Danbury as Grandma and Wood Pigeon #2; Alicia Napolitano of Woodbury as Flower Lady and Wood Pigeon #1; Ryan Taylor of New Fairfield as Moo; Veronica Fletch of New Haven as Robber Girl, Hobgoblin and Snow Goblin; Howard Powell of West Haven as Hobgoblin, Snow Goblin, 2nd Boy, Ice Guard, Crow, Snow Queen Puppeteer; Joseph DeVellis of Sandy Hook as Hobgoblin, Snow Goblin, 1st Boy, Ice Guard, Robber Grandma and Snow Queen Puppeteer; and Leah Ciccone of Wolcott as Robber Girl and Female Understudy.
