In honor of Domestic Awareness Month, The Women's Center Announces Poster Contest for Kids

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is an issue that affects individuals, families, and communities everywhere. This October, we hope to engage youth in conversations about healthy relationships through a "Healthy Relationships" Poster Contest. If you are interested in this contest, please see the following instructions.

Rules:
  • Each child that wishes to participate needs to have a consent form signed from a parent/guardian that allows their child to participate, and allows us to use the child's poster/artwork for any purpose we deem appropriate;
  • We are asking each child that wishes to participate to create a poster on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper, based on the prompt for their grade level (see prompts below);
  • The poster can be made up of words, images, art, or a combination of these. Use your creativity;
  • Each poster must have the child's first name, last name, and grade level written on the back of the submission. If you are a teacher and your students are participating, please include your name, school, and grade level. We strongly encourage schools to participate in this contest!
Prompts: The prompts for each grade level are as follows:
  • K-2: "Who do you feel safe with and why?"
              On your poster, please include "I feel safe with ____"
  • 3-5: "What does respect look like to you?"
              On your poster, please include "Respect looks like ____"
  • 6-8: "What does a healthy relationship look like?"
              On your poster, please include "A healthy relationship ____"

Winners will be chosen based on creativity and thoughtfulness related to the prompt. A prize will be awarded to one winner per grade level. This prize includes a feature on our website and social media, a certificate of recognition, and a gift certificate to a local business. The winners' posters will also be featured on display at our inaugural "Candlelight Vigil of Remembrance" on Purple Thursday, October 19th, at the Danbury Library Plaza from 6:30-7:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The deadline for submission is Friday, October 13 by 5:00 p.m.Submissions may be dropped off or mailed to our office. Please mail submissions to the attention of Ann Rodwell-Lawton at 2 West Street, Danbury, CT 06810.
