Brookfield resident Monica Mazur Named Captain of RPI Women's Track & Field Team

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Monica Mazur of Brookfield 06804 has been named a captain of the women's track & field team.

Mazur (Brookfield HS), a senior, competed in five sprint distances, three relays and jumps last year. She established personal bests in 60 meters (8.40), 300 meters (45.08) and the triple jump (10.6 meters) in indoor and 200 meters (26.63) and 400 meters (1:00.95) in outdoors. The materials engineering major had a win in the indoor 60 meters at Utica (8.40) with second place finishes in four different events during the season before winning the triple jump at Tufts University (10.40) and the 4x100 at the Liberty League Championship Meet (50.16) in outdoor. Mazur also had three runner-ups, including in the 4x400 at the state meet (4:01.95).

Rensselaer, which has 14 freshmen, 16 sophomores, 14 juniors and eight seniors, finished second in the Liberty League Indoor Championship and first in the conference's outdoor meet - for the second straight season - in 2016-17. The Engineers also won the outdoor Upstate Classic in Troy while finishing second in the Capital District Classic, also a home meet, two weeks later.

RPI is idle until January 13 when it travels to Middlebury for its first meet of 2018. The Engineers will defend their league championship on February 23-24 in Canton, N.Y., before competing in the newly-established All Atlantic Region Championship on March 2-3 in Ithaca, N.Y. The outdoor season is scheduled to begin on March 24 at Goucher College in Baltimore.

Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is America's oldest technological research university. For nearly two centuries, the Institute has been a driving force behind breakthroughs in engineering and science in virtually every arena-from transportation and infrastructure to business, medicine, outer space, and cyberspace.

As it approaches its bicentennial anniversary, the Institute continues to define The New Polytechnic, a new paradigm for teaching, learning, and research that uses advanced technologies to enable fresh collaborations across disciplines, sectors, and regions, in order to answer the global challenges of our day.
