Manipura Yoga Kicks Cancer’s Asana

Brookfield's Manipura Power Yoga hosted Kick Cancer's Asana last week to raise awareness and funding for Renal Cell Carcinoma research. They were part of a national event which included cities such as Los Angeles, Denver, Washington DC, and Portland.

"My intention for this event was to bring people together at a place that is important to me, for a cause that should be important to us all," said Deidre Americo, a Manipura yoga teacher. "Manipura is a special place to me, and a special place that I'm honored to teach & practice at. We can create change through yoga & community!" Americo also donates her time to Ann's Place, offering weekly gentle yoga classes for people living with cancer.

The event was held on March 22, 2014 and attended by more than 60 people. Attendees enjoyed a variety of yoga classes, live music, meditation and shopping with specialty vendors. Over $1000 in raffles were offered including massage, private yoga class, hair styling sessions and more all in the spirit of raising money for cancer research. Over $1,100 was raised and 100% will go directly to Renal Cell Carcinoma research.

Renal Cell Carcinoma affects over 65,000 people a year. Since it is asymptomatic and irresponsive to chemotherapy or radiation, close to 30% of those diagnosed will not win their fight. Kick Cancer's Asana brings awareness to the disease and funding for its cure.

Manipura Power Yoga opened in Brookfield in August 2013, led by owner Aaron Warren. The studio offers hot power yoga as well as a variety of classes, with and without high heat. To learn more about class and event offerings, see their website.
