In celebration of the town's 375th anniversary, this year's Fall Festival at the Greenwich Historical Society will focus on the town's early history. Re-enactors from the Fifth Connecticut Regiment will demonstrate camp life at the time of the American Revolution and march, fire muskets and display uniforms, flags, crafts and weapons from the period.
Guests may take a hayride along historic Strickland Road; enjoy a special, family-friendly tour of Bush-Holley House to learn about its early history and links to the Fifth Connecticut Regiment; visit the exhibition Greenwich Choices: 50 Objects That Illustrate Our History and try their hands at Colonial-inspired crafts. The Bounty Food Truck will be on site for refreshments.
An annual highlight of the Fall Festival is a scarecrow-making competition where guests build their very own "customized" scarecrows. For an advance fee of $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers (in addition to the entrance fee), the Historical Society will supply an armature ("the bones"), hay for stuffing, twine and a burlap sack for the head. Participants supply clothes, accessories and creativity to individualize their designs. In the past, scarecrow personalities have included everything from Vikings, farmers and scary monsters to fashionably dressed "models" wearing feather boas and elegant hats.
