Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis of Greenwich receives Ellis Island Medal of Honor

Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis of Greenwich, an extraordinary, gifted teacher, author of Choosing Hope, and founder of the nonprofit Classes 4 Classes has been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

Roig-DeBellis, a former first grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School who saved her entire class from the tragic events of December 14, 2012 by piling them into the tiny classroom bathroom, has chosen hope. The prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor is awarded annually to a group of distinguished American citizens who exemplify a life dedicated to community service.

According to the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) who sponsors the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the medals are presented annually to American citizens who have distinguished themselves within their own ethnic groups while exemplifying the values of the American way of life. Past Medalists include six U.S. President, one foreign President, Nobel Prize winners and leaders of industry, education, the arts, sports and government, along with everyday Americans who have made freedom, liberty and compassion a part of their life's work.
