Sacred Heart will open 35,000 sq. ft. athletic center and new facilities in September

Convent of the Sacred Heart will open its new 35,000 sq. ft. athletic center designed for women’s sports at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 9.

The athletic center is the central piece in a major renovation of the independent, Catholic all-girls’ school, located on 118 acres at 1177 King Street, in Greenwich. In addition, the project includes an attractive, expanded dining room and outdoor commons area.

The 35,000 sq. ft. athletic center provides two gymnasiums for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams, six squash courts, a large multi-purpose space for student assemblies, yoga/dance studio, fitness center, individual rooms and class space for physical education, press box, trainer, and administrative offices.

The dining space features a new student dining room, serving area in faculty/staff dining room, student lounge with fireplace, and outdoor dining terrace.

The outdoor commons area is a centralized green space located between the athletic center and main buildings. Walkways connect it to the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, The Barat Center for Early Childhood Education, and the library/media center. The commons features an amphitheater, playgrounds, gardens and walkways.

Sacred Heart’s 740 students return for the first day of classes on Tuesday, September 8. On Wednesday, September 9, they will gather at the front entrance of the athletic center for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which begins at 9:20 a.m. To view the live webcast, go to the school website, www.cshgreenwich.org, and click on "Ribbon Cutting" at 9:20 a.m.

Major donors and the Framing Our Future capital campaign committee, co-chaired by parents Neil Augustine and Douglas Mellert, will attend the ribbon cutting celebration. The school’s $25.5 million capital campaign, which is nearing completion, provided the funding.

Additional events will celebrate the opening of the new facilities. On Saturday, September 26, the school will hold a "First Look" at the athletic center from 1-4 p.m. On September 30, The Most Rev. Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, will bless the new center. The bishop will celebrate the first Mass of the school year in the expansive new space designed for all-school assemblies and liturgies.
