USB Collects 1,000 Pounds of Food & Donates $25,000 to Local Food Pantries

Union Savings Bank (USB) recently collected 1,000 pounds of nonperishable food items and donated $25,000 to five local food pantries as part of its 4th annual “Feeding Our Neighbors” food drive.

The Community Food Rescue in Danbury (pictured) was the recipient of the 1,000 pounds of food and the following food pantries were each awarded $5,000:

“We are proud to continue the Feeding Our Neighbors initiative in support of local food pantries and our neighbors,” said Chelen Reyes, President and CEO of Union Savings Bank. “Thanks to our community’s generosity and outpouring of donations from customers and staff, in the past four years we’ve collected nearly 4,000 pounds of food. And, through the bank and our USB Foundation we have granted more than $350,000 to area food pantries —so they can continue their vital work in fighting food insecurity.”

The Feeding Our Neighbors Challenge was initiated by United Way of Western Connecticut (now United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut) and Union Savings Bank in October of 2020 to support the local food pantries and the community as they continued to struggle with the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Former Union Savings Bank CEO, Cynthia Merkle, was instrumental in rallying two other local banks and made a combined donation of $45,000 to kick-off the program. Other local organizations joined in to raise $117,000, exceeding the $100,000 goal. USB has continued the food drive every year since then.
