Local Business Champion: The BookSmiths Shoppe

Meet Michelle Smith, Owner of The BookSmiths Shoppe

Why did you start your business?

The BookSmiths Shoppe is Danbury’s only independent bookstore, created to serve the Ridgebury neighborhood and surrounding communities. We offer a thoughtful mix of new and used books, unique gifts, and literary-inspired finds you won’t see at big-box retailers. As part of the Connecticut Book Trail, we also work hard to keep books out of landfills and offer pricing that rivals even the largest online competitors.

What is your best-selling product or service?

Our author signings and community events continue to be a standout. We prioritize local authors—giving them a platform to share their work, connect with readers, and build a following. We also support the community by donating to local nonprofits and providing a welcoming space for visitors and workers at The Summit in Danbury.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services), and can you name them?

We continue to partner with The Friends of the Danbury Library through our in-store donation center. We've collaborated with ROAR of Ridgefield, Ann’s Place, and The Center for Empowerment and Education—donating proceeds from select book sales to support their missions. Every partnership, big or small, is part of our commitment to serve more than just readers—we’re here for the whole community.

Have you reimagined your small business?

Absolutely. Since opening, we've grown tremendously, and now we’re preparing for an exciting next chapter. This fall, we’ll be moving into a new space at The Summit that’s nearly five times the size of our current shop. The expanded location will feature a dedicated book signing and event room, plus a Literary Lounge with coffee and cozy workspaces—a place to gather, read, and connect.

In the meantime, we're planning a major book sale in our current annex to help us prepare for the move—details will be announced soon!

We’ve also expanded our event offerings, both in-store and throughout the community. Our calendar is packed with author appearances, readings, and book club gatherings—you can always find the latest at www.BookSmithsShoppe.com.

Recently, we were proud to be featured in USA Today, a wonderful recognition of our role in the literary community of Greater Danbury.

We’re grateful to our readers, neighbors, and fellow book lovers for helping us grow—and we can’t wait to welcome you to our new space this fall.
