The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the prestigious (“NECBL”) New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce that they will be holding their 23RD Annual Celebrity Breakfast on June 9th at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury, CT.  The Annual Celebrity Breakfast welcomes the 2017 Danbury Westerners to the greater Western Connecticut community.  The team is led by Josh Parrow, the returning Danbury Westerner field manager who currently is also the pitching coach at Bridgeport University.  In addition, the Westerners are thrilled to announce that three-time World Series Champion, four-time All-Star, National League CY Young Award Recipient, and New York Mets Hall of Famer Dwight “Doc” Gooden, will be the speaker at this year’s annual Celebrity Breakfast.

Over his 16-year career, Dwight Gooden was a pitcher for the New York Mets (1984-1994), New York Yankees (1996-1997, 2000), Cleveland Indians (1998-1999), Houston Astros (2000), and Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2000). Gooden was a remarkably decorated athlete as a three-time World Series Champion (1986, 1996, and 2000), four-time All-Star (1984-1986, 1988), the National League CY Young Award winner (1985), Pitching Triple Crown recipient (1985), National League Rookie of the Year (1984), Silver Slugger Award winner (1992), MLB Wins Leader (1985), MLB ERA Leader (1985), two-time MLB Strikeout Leader (1984, 1985).  Gooden also pitched a no-hitter on May 14, 1996, and has been inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame.

At the Celebrity Breakfast, the Danbury Westerners will also present the annual “Michael Seri Award” in honor of the late Michael Seri, for his dedication and sportsmanship, and perpetuating community partnerships.  This year’s recipient is Mike Malone. Mike, a former President of the Danbury Westerners Baseball Club, Inc., has until recently concentrated on fundraising and as the team’s COO.  He has been affiliated with the organization since 1999. Mike has been a sales representative with Candlewood Marketing and presently owns The Soda Pop which distributes private labeled water and soda to businesses and individuals.  Formerly he was Director of Development for the American Red Cross, Western Connecticut Chapter, and was also responsible for Major Gifts for Athletics and the General Annual Fund at the University of Hartford.

In addition, Mike served several schools as athletics director, teacher (history) and coach in New Jersey, New York and Minnesota. He coached high school basketball for over 20 years and college and high school baseball for 15 years. Mike holds a Masters Degree in Education, as well as a principal’s certificate and a school supervisor’s certificate.  He is a graduate of Upsala College and Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He resides in New Milford with his wife, Sue, a pediatric physical therapist. They have two married children, Katie, an art teacher in Massachusetts, and Matt, a Danbury policeman.
