Upcoming seasonal workshops in Sherman

Want fresh spinach on your fall menu? Ever envy your neighbor’s colorful parades of tulips and daffodils? Want birds to visit your garden all year long? If so, now is the time to act!

Check out these new Adult Programs starting October 1 at the JCC, 9 Route 39 South in Sherman. Programs are open to everyone and will be led by UCONN Master Gardener graduate Michele MacKinnon, a popular and enthusiastic facilitator who favors common-sense approaches over trendy gimmicks. 

FALL FOR A COOL-SEASON VEGETABLE GARDEN - October 1 

Yes! There’s still time to grow nutritious vegetables in your own backyard. Discover the secrets to gardening despite cooler temperatures and shorter days. Learn which vegetables can be planted now and methods to extend the garden season. Fall garden cleanup and other helpful reminders will also be included. Each participant receives a vegetable seedling to grow at home this fall. No gardening experience required. 

BE DAZZLED BY SPRING BULBS YOU PLANT NOW - October 23

Crocus and daffodils are welcome harbingers of spring, but did you know their bulbs must to be planted this fall? Learn the tried-and-true practices for planting a variety of bulbs and discover some lesser-known types to make your garden unique. Each participant plants a bulb container to take home. Please register by September 30 to allow ordering of supplies.

GARDENING TO ATTRACT BIRDS YEAR-ROUND - November 6

Would you enjoy having more feathered friends and other wildlife in your garden all year long? While feeders will entice birds there are simple ways to create a natural wildlife-friendly habitat year-round. Learn which plants will attract wildlife for years to come and how careful fall garden cleanup preserves natural food sources for winter birds. Also, learn what to do in the colder months to nourish and protect our local bird species. Each participant receives a helpful resource sheet. Ms. MacKinnon was recently interviewed by The Newtown Bee about this timely topic.
